When specifications become invisible, price is the only thing left to see-and that is a symptom of a sick market.

“But how do you actually know it will work?”

“I don’t. That is the whole problem. The box says twenty-five square meters. Every box says twenty-five square meters. I just buy the one that fits the budget and hope for the best.”

“And if it doesn’t heat the room?”

“Then I suppose the room was the problem, not the heater.”

I sat with four browser tabs open on my second monitor, each one showing a different brand of oil-filled radiator. My eyes jumped from the price to the wattage, then to the “heating area” specification. It was a mess. Brand A offered a unit and claimed it could handle twenty-five square meters. Brand B offered a unit and claimed the same twenty-five square meters. As an illustrator, I spend my days looking at the structural reality of things. When I draw a femur from a dig site, I cannot just “suggest” its length; I have to measure it. If the bone is thirty centimeters long, the drawing must reflect that scale. In my world, a line is a commitment. In the world of home appliances, a line seems to be a suggestion intended to soothe a nervous buyer.

Nobody publishes the height of the ceiling in that test room. Nobody tells you if the walls were insulated with modern foam or if they were thin brick. They do not mention the outdoor temperature or the speed of the wind hitting the glass. The claim is unfalsifiable. By the time you realize the heater cannot actually warm your specific twenty-five square meters of drafty bedroom, the winter is half over and the box is in the recycling bin.

This is not just a problem for the person with cold toes. It is a structural failure of the market. When a specification cannot be verified, quality becomes invisible. When quality is invisible, the only thing a buyer can see is the price tag. We are told that price competition is a sign of a healthy market, but in this case, it is a symptom of a sick one. If I cannot prove my heater is better than yours because the numbers on the box are all the same, I have only one way to win your money: I must make my product cheaper.

The Anatomy of Market Blindness

To make it cheaper, I have to take things out. I use thinner steel for the fins. I use less oil. I use a cheaper thermostat that clicks like a metronome in the middle of the night. I keep the claim of “twenty-five square meters” because there is no law to stop me, and no way for you to check it until it is too late.

The claims inflate in lockstep while the physical reality of the machines shrinks.

I tried to meditate to clear my head of the math, but I found myself checking the clock every three minutes. My mind kept returning to the weight of the units. A 2.5 kW heater that weighs eight kilograms is a different beast than a 2.5 kW heater that weighs twelve kilograms. The first one will cycle on and off rapidly, scorched by its own internal heat but unable to push that energy into the room effectively. The second one is a reservoir of warmth. But the “square meter” claim on the box treats them as identical.

This information asymmetry does more than just trick a few people. It actively drives the good products out of the market. This is the “Market for Lemons” logic. If a buyer cannot tell the difference between a high-quality radiator and a low-quality one, they will not pay the premium for the better one. The honest manufacturer, who builds a unit with thick steel and high-grade oil, finds themselves sitting on a shelf next to a hollowed-out competitor that costs forty percent less and makes the same claims.

Searching for the “Bones”

The only way to break this cycle is to look at the things that cannot be faked. I stopped looking at the “recommended room size” and started looking at the sections. I looked at the wattage and the physical dimensions. I looked for a retailer that laid out these facts without trying to hide them behind marketing fluff. We see this same pattern in other parts of our lives. Used cars are the classic example, where the shiny paint hides a dying transmission. We see it in dietary supplements where “proprietary blends” hide a lack of active ingredients. We see it in the freelance labor market, where a low price often hides a lack of experience that will cost more in the long run. In every one of these cases, the solution is never more advertising. It is the introduction of a mechanism that makes quality checkable.

I remember illustrating a series of ancient pottery shards. To the untrained eye, they were just bits of red clay. But by measuring the thickness, the grain of the sand mixed into the clay, and the temperature at which they were fired, you could tell which potter was a master and which was a hack. A radiator is not pottery, but the principle holds. You are buying a box of energy. Choosing Truth Over Cheapness

It sits in the corner of the nursery or the home office, a silent block of oil and metal. It does not need a marketing department to explain itself. When the temperature outside drops and the wind starts to rattle the window frames, the “unfalsifiable claim” on the box becomes irrelevant.

The only thing that matters is whether the fins are warm to the touch and whether that warmth reaches the other side of the room. We spend so much of our time trying to optimize our lives based on data that we forget to ask who is providing the data and why. We compare prices on screens, clicking between tabs, looking for a “win” that is often just a well-disguised loss.

“True value is not found in the lowest number on a tag; it is found in the disappearance of a problem. A good heater is one you eventually forget is there. You only remember a cheap heater because you are still wearing a sweater.”

I closed the tabs. The room was getting dark, and the blue light of the screen was starting to grate on my eyes. I realized I had spent trying to save a few hundred lei, only to realize that the savings were an illusion. The cost of a cold room is much higher than the price of a few extra kilos of steel.

I placed the order, shut down the computer, and sat in the quiet for a moment. The meditation finally came, not because I forced it, but because I had stopped trying to solve an unsolvable equation. I had stopped trying to find truth in a place where only numbers existed. I went back to my drawing board, picked up my pen, and drew a single, honest line.
